A-Train Rumors
Rumors are beginning to circulate about the Bills' attempt to re-sign veteran running back Anthony Thomas (right). According to a report in the Buffalo News, the team has had preliminary contract discussions with Thomas and his agent. Should Willis McGahee be traded, Thomas would likely be the Bills' favorite to land the starting job in '07.
I've got mixed feelings about the possibility of the A-Train being our starter. Last season, he played very well as a starter when McGahee missed two starts. However, he will turn 30 during the '07 season and is headed towards the twilight of his career.
The two-back system would be the key to Thomas having a successful '07 campaign. Ideally, the Bills would use a second or third round pick on a runner such as Ohio State's Antonio Pittman and split the rushing load between both backs. That would give the rookie time to develop into the starter's role, while providing the Bills with more versatility out of the backfield. This is the route I see the Bills taking if McGahee is moved.
League-Wide FA Update
Here are the signings that have been reported since my last update:
- FB B.J. Askew, Tampa Bay (NY Jets) - terms not disclosed
- WR Kevin Youngblood, Carolina (Atlanta) - terms not disclosed
- DE Charlton Keith, Oakland (Cleveland) - terms not disclosed
- OL Leonard Davis, Dallas (Arizona) - TBA*
*I'll have more on the Davis signing later - the deal has not been "officially" struck, but speculation has it that Davis' deal could be even more lucrative than the record deal the Bills afforded guard Derrick Dockery. Stay tuned...
