Latest Free Agent Buzz

Here is the latest that's happening in free agency - and yes, a lot of this is Bills related:

- Former Packers running back Ahman Green (left) has reached a four-year, $23 million agreement with the Houston Texans. Green, who had already made a visit to Denver, now leaves the door a little further ajar for a possible Willis McGahee trade to the Broncos. Denver will now turn to McGahee, Travis Henry and possibly Correll Buckhalter for an answer to their RB question.

Rumors have it that Denver and Buffalo have had preliminary talks about a trade, and that the Broncos have offered a third-round pick as compensation. I'll keep this story on the forefront heading into the new week.

- Speaking of McGahee, it sounds like the New York Jets have now shown interest in acquiring the tailback who torches them oh-so-often. The New York Post reports that the Jets are pursuing free agent running backs hard, and have had discussions with Henry, Green, Dominic Rhodes, Chris Brown and T.J. Duckett.

Marv Levy is not stupid. The Jets are going to have to stick with their free agent list, because there is zero chance that Levy ships off a dependable tailback to a division rival. Zero chance. It's interesting that the Jets want in, however - their running game has been awful ever since the downfall of Curtis Martin. I expect them to lock down Rhodes to pair with Leon Washington.

- As promised, new Cowboys guard Leonard Davis (right) has received a contract that exceeds that of the Bills' Derrick Dockery, as well as Eric Steinbach and Steve Hutchinson as well. Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Davis' deal is a seven-year pact that guarantees $18.75 million of the $49.6 million deal. Davis will receive $24 million in the first three years of the deal and is expected to compete for either the right guard or right tackle job.

To me - and keep in mind that I'm just a blogging fan - this is the worst signing of the free agent period thus far. Who does Jerry Jones think he is, Dan Snyder? Davis was ousted by the Cardinals, a team that has had the worst offensive line in the league for about a decade. Former Cards coach Dennis Green continually moved Davis around on his line - not because he was looking for the best combination, but because Davis was terrible wherever he went.

For some reason, Dallas (and Washington and the Giants, for that matter) saw Davis' unsettled line shifts as him being "versatile". Davis is a full step below Dockery and Steinbach, and an entire ladder below Hutchinson. This just doesn't make sense to me - Dallas is going to regret this down the line.

- There's little chance that Mike Gandy will re-sign with the Bills now - that much is obvious. It's still pertinent to hear where he's going - and he's set up his first free agent visit with, surprise, the Cardinals. I'd consider Gandy an upgrade over Davis at left guard; he's definitely not getting $18.75 million guaranteed, though. Smart, smart Cardinals. Gandy would be a good signing for them.

Tomorrow's Updates
I've got to admit, Friday's free agent purge in Buffalo got me excited. Now, after two days of rumors and little else, I'm a little anxious for there to at least be a concrete rumor. I'm keeping my eyes open for news on McGahee and Takeo Spikes, as well as Kiwaukee Thomas and the A-Train. Heck, I'd take info on Josh Brazen right about now. If I hear anything, you'll know about it here.
