Henry a Bronco; Simmons next?
It appears that the action is finally starting to hit "frenetic pace" again - free agent visits are moving at a rapid clip with the start of Monday. Houston appears to be the busiest, with several free agents in town including DT James Reed, LB Danny Clark, QB Patrick Ramsey and potentially CB William James. The New Orleans Saints are particularly busy today as well, hosting S Kevin Kaesviharn, CB William james, LB Chris Draft and S Deon Grant.
Speaking of the Saints, reports indicate that they are close to reaching an agreement with free agent linebacker Brian Simmons. Those same reports claim that a deal could be completed by the end of the day. Simmons would be expected to start on the inside in a Saints linebacking corps that was average at best last season.
The other big name that has already landed today is former Bills and Titans RB Travis Henry (above, right). The Denver Post is indicating that Henry spent the night in Denver as contract talks between the Broncos and Henry's representation got more serious. A deal was closed closed today; according to NFL Network's Adam Schefter, the deal is for five years and includes $12 million in guaranteed money.
Locking down Henry gives Denver coach Mike Shanahan the ideal one-cut runner for his vaunted running system that annually produces high rushing totals. The deal means that the Willis McGahee trade talks never made it past the exploratory stage. It looks like the Giants, Packers and potentially the Raiders are now the biggest potential suitors for Willis.
Jordan Speculation
The important word in that headline is "speculation". The Bills' Chris Brown mentions in his blog that the Raiders may soon be parting ways with RB LaMont Jordan (left), who is due a $4.75 million roster bonus tomorrow. Word has it that rather than pay that bonus, the team will release the 29-year-old back.
Brown posits some good points about Jordan: sure, he's merely speculating, but it's interesting nonetheless. Jordan has the type of versatility that the Bills are looking for out of the backfield - he is widely regarded as one of the better receiving backs in the game. He also has little wear and tear on his body thanks to years as Curtis Martin's backup as a Jet.
If he comes at the right price, it would not shock me to see several teams, including the Bills, go after Jordan. From Buffalo's perspective, the team would likely want to sign him to a shorter-term deal and draft a rookie to play behind him. At this point it seems unlikely, but it would not be a total shocker.
Signings Update
Here are the latest signings since my last league-wide update:
- CB Kenny Wright, Cleveland (Washington) - 3 year deal
- TE David Martin, Miami (Green Bay) - TBA
- RB Travis Henry, Denver (Tennessee) - 5 year deal
I'll post one more update later on this evening. Still got my eyes open for any solid Bills news; keep your fingers crossed.
