Change at RB Seemingly Imminent
It has been a long, strange day in the city of Buffalo. There are plenty of stories to be heard in regards to the Bills, and they all deal with one position: running back. Read on for more on Willis McGahee, Chris Brown and Corey Dillon, and their potential futures with the Bills organization. You won't regret it.
McGahee Talks Heat Up (UPDATED)
ESPN's John Clayton is reporting that talks between the Bills and Ravens about a potential trade for RB Willis McGahee (top left) are heating up. This according to a report from WGR 550 in Buffalo.
The Ravens have begun showing signs of being very serious about McGahee as well. First, they told former starting running back Jamal Lewis that he could either accept their 1-year offer or look for a job elsewhere. Lewis visited with the Cleveland Browns today. In addition, the team began clearing cap space by releasing guard Edwin Mulitalo. The move does not appear to have a motive at the moment, but could easily be interpreted as the team clearing cap room in order to provide McGahee with a new contract.
In addition, ProFootballTalk posted this story at 7:18 PM ET:
McGAHEE TO RAVENS TONIGHT OR TOMORROW?
A league source tells us that there's a good chance that the Buffalo Bill will trade running back Willis McGahee to the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday night or Thursday.
Per the source, there are a couple of other teams still in the hunt for McGahee. As of now, however, the Ravens are at the front of the pack.
Also, a reader tells us that there are reports on Sirius NFL Radio that such a trade would entail Baltimore sending a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick to Buffalo.
If the trade happens, Ravens likely will be signing McGahee to a long-term deal. Based on recent contracts, McGahee could get $20 million in guaranteed money. (Ray Lewis will be thrilled with that.)
Meanwhile, the Bills are looking for McGahee's eventual replacement. Chris Brown visited Buffalo on Wednesday, and Corey Dillon is up next.
A keen eye will be kept on this situation by all. If something happens tonight, I'll get it up here at top speed. If McGahee goes, who will replace him? It appears the Bills have two candidates:
Brown in Town, Cancels Visit to Detroit
As reported yesterday, Titans running back Chris Brown was in Orchard Park today for a visit. His flight into town was delayed, so Brown has apparently cancelled his scheduled visit to Detroit tomorrow so that he can get a full visit in Buffalo.
A lot of people have misinterpreted this as a sign that a Brown signing is imminent. Don't make that mistake. Brown appears to be a prime candidate to start at running back here if Willis is traded, but his cancelled visit means nothing beyond a late flight.
A third story also indicates that a Brown signing is not yet in the works.
Corey Dillon to Visit Thursday
ESPN's John Clayton also reports that free agent running back Corey Dillon (right) will visit One Bills Drive tomorrow. Dillon, who recently asked for his release from the Patriots, has chosen the Bills as his first free agent stop this off-season. See the WGR 550 story for more.
There is still speculation that Dillon is leaning towards retirement. However, there are certain situations out there that intrigue the veteran tailback. Philadelphia has been in contact with his agent - the Eagles are looking for a complement to current back Brian Westbrook. The Bills are the first team to show legitimate interest in Dillon, however.
In Buffalo, Dillon would not have the pressure of carrying a full workload, but he would be getting more than the 8-10 carries Patriots coach Bill Belichick promised him before cutting him. Dillon would likely be paired with a young running back acquired via draft. He would be nothing more than a stopgap, sure, but he would give the Bills a dependable solution for a year as the team searched for its running back of the future.
